Stanisław Bareja – a director whose films and series have enjoyed unflagging popularity for decades – he was a master of comedy and … moonshine. Although he only drank alcohol during the holidays and in small amounts, he knew very well how to produce it, which in the days when high-alcohol drinks were bought on cards, was a skill very much in demand!
Creator of the cult “Teddy” he was an accomplished cook. It was said about his borscht, bigos and cold soup that the best Warsaw restaurants would not be ashamed of. In the pages of Maciej Replewicz’s book “Stanisław Bareja. The King of the Crooked Mirror”, Stanisław Tym, who was friends with Bareja, recalled that the director could work miracles in the kitchen.
“He was a great cook, and because I also always liked to stand at pots, we quickly fell into our hearts” – confessed Tym.
Friends visiting Stanisław Bareja in his apartment in Mokotów or in the house in Goławice nad Wkra could always count on something delicious to eat and a glass of alcohol of their own production.
“Moonshine Bareja rushed forward, and I was also doing it then as a former chemistry student, so we matched it too” – Stanisław Tym told the author of “King of the Crooked Mirror”, recalling his deceased friend.
About an extraordinary talent Stanisław Bareja all his friends knew about driving the forward moonshine. However, no one had any idea that he was helped in the illegal practice by … children – daughter Katarzyna and son Jan.
“We lived in Mokotów, we walked” to the tracks “, that is, at the end of Woronicza Street, where rowan trees grew. I was climbing a tree, and dad was waiting downstairs with a sack into which I dropped bunches of blueberries so that he could make a rowanberry” – said Katarzyna Bareja in an interview with “Twój Styl”.
In addition to home-made rowanberry, the director also produced his own whiskey from oak bark collected with children.
“He made alcohol in various ways. He also taught me how to drive. When I was in college, my friends called my alcohol BB – Moonshine Barei” – recalled the director’s daughter in “Twój Styl”.
The equipment for the production of moonshine was given to Stanisław Bareja as a gift from another director – Ryszard Ber.
“He treated this activity (driving his own alcohol – editor’s note) as a playful hobby” – claims Katarzyna Bareja.
Though Stanisław Bareja he knew very well how to produce moonshine and did it regularly, never abused alcohol, and after the second heart attack he gave up drinking strong liquors completely. The heroes of his films and series drank it with pleasure. After the premiere of Brunet in the Evening, the director was even accused of promoting drunkenness!
“I got a letter from the viewer. A correspondent signed as” One of the last abstainers in Poland “accused me of advertising the addiction in the film. Poles miserably spend their free Saturdays: vodka, black pudding and watching TV “- explained Bareja later in an interview for the” Itd “weekly.
