According to a response from the head of the consular office, Călin Radu Ancuța, at the request of HotNews.ro, the Consulate General of Romania in New York “was asked to provide only logistical support MAT and staffed with staff sent on a mission by MAT, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Tourism, who traveled from Romania to participate in this event.
Who did it and why the photo at the tourist fair went viral?
Regarding the photo that went viral, in which the consulate officials appear at the Romanian stand, with some A4 photos hanging on a black canvas, Ancuța claims that it was taken by the representatives of the Office of Commercial and Economic Promotion from New York and those of the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Tourism, who traveled to New York.
“The decision to remove the original post from CG New York’s Facebook account was made because the consular office was not responsible for attending the event and preferred that matters related to public communication be carried out by the responsible ministry,” he said. Călin Radu Ancuța.
“Other details regarding the aspects related to costs, opportunity and conclusions of participation in this event can be requested from the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, which is the institution responsible for the representation of Romania at this Tourism Fair. The employees of the Consulate General do not have attributions regarding the way in which the respective stand was organized ”, it is also shown in the specification of the Consulate, signed by Călin Radu Ancuța.
The consulate published, on April 5, a photo with Romania’s stand at a tourism fair in New York, boasting of the “dissemination of exclusive information” and tourism offers. But the picture shows what the stand was like. On a black canvas were caught from time to time several photos in A4 format with tourist attractions in Romania.
“Representatives of our country have benefited, throughout the event, from the support and logistical support of the leadership of the Consulate General of Romania in New York and the Bureau of Commercial and Economic Promotion,” the post reads.
Critical reactions were not long in coming, and the post has been deleted. However, the image went viral.
Stand paid by the Ministry of Tourism. The minister blames the exhibitors
Romania’s participation in the New York tourism fair, with a basic package, has been included in the list of international exhibition events for this year. The document was drafted and approved during the consultations held at the institution’s headquarters with the representatives of the associations, federations and employers’ associations, and subsequently approved by the order of the Minister of Entrepreneurship and Tourism no. 80 / 27.01.2022, is shown in a specification of the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Tourism.
Minister Constantin Daniel Cadariu stated that he was not satisfied with the way our country was represented, but blamed the exhibitors.
“It was, somehow, the duty of the exhibitors who requested to participate in this fair to ensure the representation in dignified conditions,” the minister added.
The Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Tourism specified that the arrangement of Romania’s stand at the New York Tourism Fair was a standard offered by the organizer, the decoration being made of black canvas, being specific to the exhibition event for more than 20 years.
The ministry paid $ 7,990 for this type of arrangement.
Ambassador Muraru: “It’s outrageous and shameful”
Romania’s ambassador to the United States, Andrei Muraru, reacts after the image of our country’s stand at the New York tourism fair went viral, arousing criticism.
“It simply came to our notice then. I saw no resignation and no accountability. It is not possible for this to happen. Whoever organized the participation in the fair must answer the question of who is to blame and take action. Otherwise, such situations can be repeated “, Andrei Muraru declared for HotNews.ro.
Cadariu suspends Romania’s participation in international tourism fairs
Romania’s participation in international tourism fairs will be suspended, and actions to promote Romania’s destination in foreign markets will be resumed only based on concepts approved by the National Tourism Brand Council (CBTN) and the Tourism Advisory Council (CCT), announced on Tuesday the Minister of Entrepreneurship and Tourism, Daniel Cadariu.
Cadariu states that the way Romania presented itself at this year’s Tourism Fair in New York, where the stand consisted of a black curtain on which several A4 photos were attached with clips, is not a premiere. According to Cadariu, the checks made in the last two days showed that in 2019, at the Los Angeles Tourism Fair, the decoration of the Romanian stand consisted of a “completely black wall”.
